The Rum Manhattan: A new twist on a traditional cocktail
Posted by Liz Downey on
The Manhattan. A traditional cocktail that many know and love. But what makes a "cocktail" a cocktail? To answer this question, we have to go back into history, to a time before we referred to all alcoholic concoctions as cocktails. In the stricter sense, a cocktail refers to a drink made up of a spirit, sugar (may be a liqueur), water (or ice), and bitters. A Manhattan follows this formula, using whiskey, sweet vermouth, and aromatic bitters.
With a roll of the dice we came up with a simple but delicious variation, using rum instead of whiskey.
Rum Manhattan
2 oz. rum
1 oz. sweet vermouth
4 dashes aromatic bitters, such as Angostura
Orange peel, or other garnish

Place ice in a cocktail shaker or stirring vessel. Add the rum, vermouth and bitters. Stir, then strain the drink into the glass. Garnish with orange peel.
Enjoy!
